Getting there

Tangier to Asilah: Train, Bus, Grand Taxi or a Private Tour

Asilah is about 45 km south of Tangier, roughly 45 minutes by road. Regular trains on the Tangier to Rabat line stop at Asilah station, a short ride from the medina, and buses and shared grand taxis also run from Tangier.

A private tour saves the connections and fits Tangier's coast into the same day: your driver collects you in Tangier, a licensed guide shows you both towns, and you are back in the evening, 6 to 7 hours in all.

Asilah, the Atlantic Medina

Asilah is a small fishing town on the Atlantic, inside walls built by the Portuguese, who held it in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its medina is whitewashed and quiet, and every summer an arts festival brings painters who cover its walls with new murals, so they change from year to year.

We spent 3 amazing days in the north of Morocco visiting Tangier, Asilah, and Chefchaouen. The weather was really hot, but everything else was fantastic! Big thanks to Fadi who took great care of us. We got to try delicious Moroccan food like tajine and couscous. Also, the driver drove calmly so we could enjoy the beautiful views between Tangier and Chefchaouen. Unforgettable experience! Thanks Fadi !

Questions and answers

Questions about the Tangier to Asilah Day Tour

How far is Asilah from Tangier?

About 45 km, roughly 45 minutes by road each way. The whole private tour, Tangier's coast in the morning and Asilah in the afternoon, takes 6 to 7 hours.

How do you get from Tangier to Asilah?

By train (regular trains on the Tangier to Rabat line stop at Asilah station, a short ride from the medina), by bus or shared grand taxi, or by car. On the private tour your driver takes you door to door and back the same day.

Is Asilah worth a day trip from Tangier?

Yes, for a slower afternoon: the medina is small, walled and quiet, with murals on its walls and the Atlantic below the ramparts. This tour covers Tangier's coast in the morning too, so you see both in one day.

What is included in the price?

Your licensed local guide, a private air-conditioned car with pickup and drop-off in Tangier, the visit of Asilah's medina and ramparts, and entry fees to the places on the itinerary, from $100 per person for your group only. Meals are not included.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

There is no deposit for most groups; groups of 11 or more pay a deposit of 40% of the agreed price to hold the date. You pay on the day in cash (US dollars, euros, pounds sterling or dirhams), by PayPal or by bank transfer; cards are not accepted. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before, and with no deposit there is nothing to pay.

When are the murals in Asilah painted?

They are there all year. New ones are painted every summer during the town's arts festival, so the walls change from one year to the next.
