Modern Morocco
The Atlantic coast, from Tangier to Casablanca
Most tours head inland to Fes and the desert. This one follows the Atlantic coast south to the two cities that run Morocco today: Rabat, the royal capital, and Casablanca, the largest city and home of the Hassan II Mosque.
On the way down you stop at Lixus, a Phoenician and then Roman city above the Loukkos river near Larache. In Rabat you walk the Kasbah of the Udayas and see the Hassan Tower and the royal mausoleum. In Casablanca you go inside the great mosque on the official tour.
It ends at Casablanca airport, which suits a flight home, or we drive you back to Tangier. Short drives, no mountains: an easy three days for business travellers and anyone curious about modern Morocco.

Tangier to Rabat
Lixus, Larache and the royal capital

South along the Atlantic to the ruins of Lixus above the Loukkos river, a Phoenician and then Roman city, and a coffee in Larache's oval main square. On to Rabat by mid-afternoon for a first walk in the Kasbah of the Udayas and its Andalusian garden above the river mouth.

Rabat to Casablanca
Rabat's monuments and the great mosque

The Habous quarter, then onward

A morning in the Habous, the new medina built in the 1930s, and the Art Deco streets of the centre. Then drop-off at Mohammed V airport, or the drive back to Tangier on the motorway, about three and a half hours. The high-speed train is another way back: about 2 hours 10 from Casablanca to Tangier.

What travellers ask before they book.
Can we visit inside the Hassan II Mosque?
Yes, on the official guided tours, which run several times a day except at Friday prayers. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and the entry fee is paid on site.
Can the tour end at Casablanca airport?
Yes. We leave you at Mohammed V airport on day three, or drive you back to Tangier if you prefer.
Why stop at Lixus?
It breaks the drive south with the ruins of one of the oldest cities in Morocco, founded by the Phoenicians and later a Roman colony. The Larache excursion covers it in more detail.
How do you get from Tangier to Casablanca or Rabat?
The Al Boraq high-speed train is the quickest: about 1 hour 20 minutes to Rabat and a little over 2 hours to Casablanca. This private tour goes by road instead, down the Atlantic coast, with stops at Lixus, the Kasbah of the Udayas in Rabat and the Hassan II Mosque.
How much does it cost?
