Larache sits on the Atlantic about 90 km south of Tangier, where the Loukkos river meets the ocean. Just outside the town, on a hill above the river, lie the ruins of Lixus: founded by the Phoenicians around the 8th century BC, later a Roman colony, and placed by ancient writers at the Garden of the Hesperides.

Why Larache
Larache, the quiet Atlantic town
Larache was a Spanish protectorate town until 1956, and it still shows: the oval plaza, the market hall and the cafés read as much Andalusian as Moroccan. Before that, Lixus was one of the oldest cities on the Atlantic coast of Africa.
Few visitors make the trip, which is the point. You get a Roman site almost to yourselves and a working fishing town that has not changed its pace for tourists.
