The short answer

Can you do a day trip to Tangier from Gibraltar?

Yes, through Spain. The ferry service between Gibraltar and Morocco has ended, so the way across is the ferry from Tarifa: cross the frontier into La Línea, drive about 45 minutes to Tarifa, and sail about an hour to the Tanger Ville port, in the city. Algeciras, on the way, has ferries too, but they land at Tanger Med, about 40 km east of Tangier.

Since 15 July 2026 there are no routine passport checks at the land frontier between Gibraltar and La Línea. Customs rules still apply, and Morocco needs your passport anyway, so keep it with you all day.

Book the Tarifa ferry yourself and send us your times. Tour Guide Tangier meets you at the Tanger Ville port exit with your name, plans the day around your crossings and brings you back to the port 60 minutes before your ferry. A private tour starts from $25 per person for a group of 4.

Leaving the Rock

The frontier, the road and the ferry

The frontier and the road

Gibraltar's land frontier opens onto La Línea, in Spain. Since 15 July 2026 the routine passport checks there have gone, under the agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union; customs formalities still apply during the transition, so keep tobacco and alcohol within the allowances on the way back.

From the frontier, Tarifa is about 45 minutes by road, about 43 km on the A-7 and then the N-340. Be at the Tarifa terminal at least an hour before your ferry, or earlier if your ticket says so.

The ferry from Tarifa

About an hour to Tanger Ville, with passport control for Morocco at a desk on board: join the queue soon after you sail. The first ferries leave Tarifa in the morning and the last ones back leave Tangier in the evening, at times that change with the season.

Gibraltar keeps the same time as Spain, one hour ahead of Morocco in winter and two hours ahead in summer. Each side's ferry times are in its own local time.

Before you cross

Three things to sort before you leave Gibraltar

  • Passport

    Always

The frontier no longer checks it routinely, but the ferry and Moroccan passport control do. Check the visa rules for your nationality before you travel. If you cross on your own ferry ticket, an ID card is not enough: Morocco asks for a passport valid for more than six months, even for a day trip.

  • Customs

    Still there

Customs formalities between Gibraltar and Spain still apply during the transition: on the way back, keep tobacco and alcohol within the allowances.

  • Time

    Gibraltar is ahead

Morocco keeps GMT all year since 20 September 2026. Gibraltar, like Spain, is one hour ahead in winter and two hours ahead in summer.
